Today, everyone should know the parts of speech and examples of each.

Parts of Speech

Parts of speech are different kinds of words.

Verb: an action word

Examples:

  • smash
  • run
  • jump
  • cycle, skip, shout, swim, sprint, jog, fish

Noun: person, place, thing, or idea

Examples:

person:
Robyn, female, prime minister, president, teacher, boy, Saxons
place:
Drummore, Glasgow, England, town, country, highlands, home, city, village, county, school
things:
dog, horse, panda, table, mouse, wheelchair, great white shark, slide, pen, tower, flowerpot, moose
idea:
imagination, (unicorn?), thought, dream, fantasy, heaven, thought shower, nightmare, feelings, pain

A few special KINDS of nouns:

Pronoun: a noun that TAKES THE PLACE of another noun
for example:
John did this, John did that > HE did this, HE did that
HE, HIS, THEY, WE, SHE, US, HER, OUR, IT, HIM, THEIR, THEM

Proper noun: a noun that names a SPECIFIC person, place, organization, etc. and gets a CAPITAL LETTER
examples: Neil, Scotland, Thames River, Jason, Stranraer, Isle of Lewis, Nintendo, Brownies, Marie Curie Cancer Research, Nobel Prize, Stranraer Academy, The Academy Vet Center, Beijing Olympics, Westlife, The Beatles, Manchester United, Red Sox

Common noun: any noun that does NOT get a capital letter (except at the start of a sentence, in a title, etc)
